Project Proposal

For unit 3, we are allowed to choose our own area we would like to photograph. I have decided that I am going to do Macro photography, also known as extreme close up photography. I will experiment with close up photography as well as extreme close ups as they link together nicely. I have chosen this area to photographer because I believe that there is a wide range of ideas and a large variety of different elements that I can photograph.

For example:

Extreme close ups of eyes. This could either be human eyes or animal eyes.

Extreme close ups of flowers, either the centre of the flower or other elements of the flower.

I have been looking at a variety of extreme close up images and have found a number of different ideas that have influenced me.

In this image you can see that it is a close up of water droplets from the rain that have formed on the leaves. I like this idea and would like to do it in my own way as part of my project.

This image is a extreme close up of a kiwi, I like the idea that with the extreme close ups it creates a mystery to the photo as you have to take a second look to see what the object actually is. I would also like to take extreme close ups of fruit for part of this project.

In this photograph a extreme close up has been taken of a bug, I liked how much detail you can see on the bug itself that you would not normally be able to see. This is another idea that I would definitely like to experiment with in my project.

I have also been looking at a photographers work of extreme close up bugs. Colin Hutton takes extreme close ups of different bugs to show their true beauty as he said many people call bugs "ugly". I was very influenced by his work as they don't look real because he is so close to the bugs and the detail is amazing, his work is very impressive and looks impossible to do.

Some of his work:

I feel that I can approach this project in all different ways and from all different angles because there is a massive variety of ideas for me to photograph. With my other unit I chose the area of story telling, I found it hard to come up with an idea for a shoot every lesson, therefore I feel my approach to this unit will be a lot more confident and relaxed because I will have so many ideas to choose from.

To start this project I am going to look at other photographers work to get some ideas. I am going to start by taking extreme close ups of flowers as I believe that this is an easier idea to photograph, I will then move onto the harder ideas that I have, for example: Bugs. For this project I am going to get a close up lens so I am able to get the best possible photographs.

Image Bank- Multiple Flash

In this photograph you can see that it is someone playing with cards or doing a magic trick. The multiple flash allows you to see the movements made with the cards. The multiple flash technique also creates a mystery, magical effect to the photo.

This image shows a number of movements that have been made during a dance, multiple flash allows you to see the different movements all in one image. You can clearly see the beginning and end position and then the multiple flash images of the movements made are between the beginning and end potion.

In this photo the movement of someone throwing a ball is captured in one single image with the use of multiple flash. Due to multiple flash being used you can see a step by step movement of the whole process of the ball being thrown.

This photograph is also movements made within a dance. Again the multiple flash allows you to see all the movements that are made but within one single image. The image being against a black background makes the outlines of the different movements more clear to see.

In this image you can see the movement of a ball being thrown, the use of multiple flash allows you too see the ball moving through the air at different stages.

This photograph shows the technique of multiple flash, which is shown through the movements of the women in the photograph, the multiple flash technique allows you to see a number of different images all in one image.

Image Bank- Multiple Imagery

In this image a number of photographs have been taken of a persons face, they have then all been put together in a order to create the technique of multiple imagery. The images have all been edited into black and white.

This image is also a number of images been put together. The images are all different sections of leaves shown together to make multiple imagery.

This image also shows multiple imagery through the use of different lip movements. Again the different images have been placed all together in a order. a variety of different angles have been used for the different photos in the multiple imagery photo.

This image uses 6 photographs to create multiple imagery. The photos show different perspectives and angles of a road. They have then all been put together as one image.

In this photograph you can see a number of different parts of the tree and different angles of photographs that have then all been put together to create multiple imagery.

This photo shows many different pictures of a clock, close ups, extreme close ups and a variety of pictures that have been taken at different angles. The photos are then put into a order to make one image of multiple imagery.

Work Diary- Wide Angle & Close Up

In this lesson we went to a location shoot to take photographs for the technique of Wide Angle.

In this image I have taken of the model, her hand is in front of the camera and her body is slightly further away, this creates the effect of wide angle because it makes her hand seem much bigger than the rest of her body, which would not be the case in real life. If I was to take this image again, I would think more about the background as it takes away the focus from the image.

During this lesson we had to take photographs of close ups.

I have taken this photo of the models eye to show the technique of close ups, the eye is the main subject in the photo and by taking the close up you can see the little details in the eye. If I was to take this photograph again I would try to take it without getting me taking the photo inside of the eye.

Technique Page- Minimum Depth of Field

Depth of Field:

Depth of field is how much of the photograph is in focus based on distance, meaning the subject closest to the camera is in focus and the background is not.

Step by step guide:
There are two different kinds of depth of field- minimum and maximum depth of field.
Minimum being when the foreground is in focus and the background is not and Maximum being where everything in the photograph is sharp and in focus.

Minimum Depth of Field

  • Get close to your subject
  • Make the aperture bigger(a smaller number)
  • Use a larger zoom
Maximum Depth of Field
  • Get far away from your subject
  • Make the aperture smaller(a bigger number)
  • Use a smaller Zoom.

Work Diary- Minimum Depth of Field

During this lesson we had to go out on a location shoot and photograph Minimum depth of Field.

In this image I have used a man-made background which is not in focus, however the main subject (beth) at the front of the image is in focus, which is minimum depth of field. If I was to take this photograph again I would improve the composition of the photo as I haven't included the top of the models head but I have included her shoulders.

For this photograph I have used a natural background of a plant. The background is not in focus but the  model at the front of the image is in focus, this creates minimum depth of field. If I was to take this photograph again I would experiment with the different angles to see which I like best.

Technique Page- Sequences

Sequences:

Sequencing is something that follows something else, to create a pattern.

Step by step guide:

  • First you need to decide what subject you are going to shoot. An example which you could do is class members standing in a line and then taking turns to sit down or turn around.
  • Once you have decided what you are going to shoot, you need to ensure that your camera remain in the same place and distance from the subject and the only thing changing is the position of the subject. This is what will determine the effect working or not.
  • Once you have your desired photographs, upload them to Photoshop.
  • Open a new transparent A4 document in Photoshop.
  • Change the levels and curves to the photograph which you would like to use for you sequence.
  • Then re-size them to ensure they will fit on the A4, however make sure they are all the same size.
  • Now place the photographs on the A4 document starting with the first and ending with the last. It is up to you how you arrange them depending whether the page is landscape or portrait and how many photograph you have.
  • Once you are happy with the positioning of your photograph, flatten the image.
  • You are now ready to print.

Work Diary- Sequences

During this lesson, we went to a location to take photographs for the technique of sequences.

To create this sequence image I took four photographs of the different letters to spell the word 'love', I then took a separate photograph including all of the letters. I then placed them all in order to create a sequence.

If I was to take this photograph again I wouldn't include as much of the background in the first four small images at the beginning of the sequence.
