Mid-Project Evaluation

This project so far has been very enjoyable and interesting. I have really liked doing my own personal project as I was allowed to decide to do what ever I liked. I feel that I have a number of ideas and haven't struggled to think of ideas for shoots like i have in previous projects. I have also liked doing all the techniques within the project as it has allowed me to look at different ways of taking photographs and made me recognise the possible techniques I could use in my personal project. For example, I feel that the technique multiple imagery would be really well incorporated within my project, therefore in my first shoot I made multiple imagery pieces.

During this project I have been doing all the  written work as I go along, meaning when I did the technique animation I would then do the image bank, technique page and work diary so that when it comes to having to complete all of the written work I have already done majority of it rather than leaving it to last minute and not having enough time to complete it all. Within this project the only thing I have found hard is being able to do a location shoot due to it now be winter it is hard to do a location shoot because the weather is so unreliable and it is almost raining every time its personal shoot day. However I am very happy with all of my studio shoots so far as I prefer the lighting in the studio anyway and feel that the photographs look more professional in the studio.

From looking at my previous work and then comparing it to my work so far in this project I feel that I have made a lot of progress as my understanding of photoshop has developed and my general idea of what photos will look good and what will not is a lot better. I am also a lot more comfortable and confident with experimenting with different ideas for shoots whereas in previous projects I played it safe with my ideas. I feel that within this project my progress will keep improving as we have done a variety of different and interesting techniques now and my photography skills are getting better as I go along.

Work Diary- Video

During todays lesson we had to make a video. The video didn't have to have any planning behind it and didn't have to mean anything, I could literally film anything without it having to have a meaning. Once I had taken a few videos I then had to edit them on premier pro. I used a number of different editing effects, I made one video black and white and overlaid the video, I also made one section of a video in colour and other parts in black and white. If I was to do this lesson again I would take more videos as I when it got to the editing process some of them didn't look as good as I thought they would, for example I took a hand held video of my journey in to college but when editing the video it was so jumpy and wobbly it was too unclear to see.

In this video I filmed the tap dripping and then getting faster and faster. The composition of the video only includes the bottom part of the tap rather than the whole of it as I wanted it to look as if the tap was turing on itself and if the whole tap was included you could see the person turing the tap. During the editing process I made the video black and white as it made it look more ghostly. After this I then overlaid the video two times on top of each other but each time changing the scale of the video so the taps got smaller as they went along. If I was to take this video again I would experiment with the different angles I would take the video from, for example: high or low angle.

Work Diary- Slow Sync

During todays lesson I had to do a studio shoot for the technique Slow Sync. In order to do this I had to use a black background and the 'Redhead' light. When taking the photographs the model/models had to be standing in the light and make a movement to get a focused picture and a blurred movement in the same image. If I was to do this lesson Again I would focus on the composition of the photo.

In this image I had two models, one standing and the other bending down, moving their heads in different directions. This allowed me to capture the focused picture of their face and then the blurred movement from their heads moving. If I was to take this photo again I would Focus on the composition of the model lower down because she is in a slightly weird angle.
For this image to create the Slow Sync technique I had the model run across the camera. this allowed me to photograph the blurred movement of the model running and then I also captured the focused picture of the model running at the end. If I was to take this photograph again I would focus on the timing of taking the image so that I could capture the whole movement of the model running across the camera.

Work Diary- 5th Shoot

During todays lesson I did a studio shoot for my personal project. I took close up photographs of different shells because my personal project is Close Ups. I used the boom light for the lighting and a plain white background. If I was to do this shoot again I would Use a black background because some of the shells were cream/white it was hard to see them clearly.

In this image I have taken an extreme close up of half the starfish, you can see the lumps and bumps it has on it. Due to the image being a close up you can see the patterns on the starfish in detail. The colour of the starfish is a vibrant pink which is highlighted by the bright lighting that I used. If I was to take this image again I would try to get the back leg of the starfish in focus and in this image it isn't in focus.

This image shows a number of different shells laid out next to each other. You can see the contrast between all the different coloured shells. There are very detailed patters and shapes on the shells. I used a white background although you cannot really see it in this image and the boom for lighting. If I was to take this image again I would take a more extreme close up image rather than just a close up.

Again my influence behind this shoot came from Corrie White's work as within this shoot I incorporated the use of vibrant colours.

As a result of this shoot I am going to continue to use bright colours in future shoots when possible as I believe colour plays a key part in close up photograph as I have found from research. For my next shoot I a going to photograph flowers in the studio as I prefer to use the studio rather than location & I have chosen to photograph flowers as they have bright colours.

Photographer Three

Dave Wood

Why Chosen: I have chosen this photographer because his work is very different from other macro photographers I have looked at. Also I like his images because it shows his fun personality and the image come across as very funny when looking at them. This photographer focusses on water droplets and reflections within the water drops made, he also takes a number of images of water splashes with vibrant colours and bubbles. I like the mystery of the photographs because until you look closely you do not notice the funny reflections in the water drops.

In this image you can see that the a dripping water from the trap has been captured in movement. The photographer has then edited a reflection of the monster from Monsters Ink. This is very effective because it portrays humour through the image. The subject is in focus but the background has been blurred to show the clear outline of the water drop.

This image captures the movement of a water splash. Due to the fact the image is a close up you can see the tinny reflection of a car in side the bubble from the film "Cars". The background has been blurred and the lighting used is shadowy and fairly dark.

This image is another humorous photograph from Dave Wood. He has used a character from the film " The incredibles". The background has been blurred to make the bubble the main focus. The lighting looks very natural. The composition of this image having the bubble in the centre of the image draws the audience attention to the image and they directly look at the reflection, whereas in other images the reflection wasn't as obvious, you had to look closely.

In this image you can see the splash that has been captured. You can see the water rings that are created in the water when the splash is made. There is contrast between the different colours of blue int he image. The background used is dark blue/navy. The lighting used is vibrant and reflected on the background to make the water look blue. You can see that the outer circle of the splash is dar blue and almost looks spiky and sharp.

Influence: This photographers work has influenced me to show my own personality through my images. He has also influenced me to be more creative with my ideas as his idea is very creative and unique.

Summary: Overall this photographer has influenced me as I am very eggier to take my own photographs of water splashes as I like the use of colours and the movement it captures that you wouldn't normally notice. I am not very interested in this photographers work anymore as I have found that his images are all very much the same and do not link in with my work as much as I thought they would.

My Own Work:

This image is my own photograph that I took as a result of being inspired by the use of water in Dave's work. I liked the blue colour scheme used in Dave's picture above of the water splash, therefore when I did my own shoot I decided to use blue food colouring. Both my image and Dave's photograph links due to the use of water within photography, the blue colour scheme is the same and both images are close ups.

Technique Page- Slow Sync

Slow Sync:
Is a way of capturing movement in a photo.

Step by step guide:

  • Firstly the camera has to be set up correctly. In order to do this you must have a long shutter speed and the camera has to be set to the "White Balance" option.
  • You will have to use the 'Redhead' light.
  • You will need a black background for this technique & the background will have to be protected from the light.
  • Add a flash
  • Make sure the cameras set on "rare curtain sync".
  • Add the flash at same aperture.

Image Bank- Slow Sync

In this image the technique Slow Sync has been used. You can see from the image that the subject (the person) is in focus and the background is blurred. This creates the effect that of movement. In order to create the blurred effect the person is spinning around.

This image also shows the Slow sync technique. The movement of the train has created the background to be blurred but the person is in focus. This technique is a way of showing movement within a photo, the movement in in this image is the train going past.

In this image the movement that has been created is the baby being spun around and around. The background is blurred but the baby is in focus, this is an example of the Slow Sync Technique.

This image shows the movement of football players in the middle of a game. The background/the crowd are blurred which creates the effect of movement in the image, this is the technique Slow Sync. The football players are in focus.

In this image you can see that the Slow Sync the technique has been used through the movement of a boy on a moving swing. The background being blurred shows that he is moving but the subject (the boy) is still in focus.

The movement in this image is the boy on his skateboard. Slow Sync technique has been used to show movement in the photo. The boy is in focus but the background is completely blurred.
